LUES ANTI-BULLY SHOW (9/24/24) PERMISSION SLIPS As part of our Positive Behavior Rewards, we would like to take students on a field trip to the PAL Theatre to see the Anti-Bully Show "SUPER ME". Please return permission slips (filled out front and back) and $6 to attend the show. In order for students to qualify, they must have excellent behavior from 9/20/24-9/24/24 (4 days)- no office referrals and no classroom referrals. As always, we will accept donations for any student(s) that cannot afford to attend.

LUES Participates in FIT Georgia
As part of your child's physical education program, Lyons Upper Elementary is preparing to take part in the FIT Georgia physical fitness assessment. All students in grades 3-5 will participate in this assessment, which aligns with the state law requiring schools to measure areas of fitness related to the health of students, including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body competition.
The following FIT Georgia fitness assessments will be used to measure the various areas of health-related fitness:
*15M or 20M or 1-mile run (Cardiovascular)
*Curl -Up (Abdominal Strength)
*Push-Up (Upper Body Strength)
*Sit and Reach (Flexibility)
*Body Mass Index (Body Composition)
It is important to note that the assessment does not compare your child to anyone else, nor does it measure skill or athletic performance. Instead, it compares your child to health standards established by researchers as the level of fitness all students should reach to attain health benefits.
After the assessment, you will receive a student report that includes a brief explanation of each fitness assessment, details on the importance of each assessment, and your child's actual scores. You can use this report as a tool to support your child in leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Here are a few ways you can support your student:
*Stress the importance of fitness for feeling good
*Provide equipment that encourages physical activity
*Help your child identify a time and place for daily physical activity
*Limit screen time (TV, video games, devices, etc.)
*Be a role model for your child
*Teach your child games you enjoyed playing as a child
*Praise and encourage your child to be active
*Involve your child in after-school or recreation programs within the community

Our monthly Toombs County Board of Education meeting was held yesterday, Sept. 12th, at 6:00pm. During this month's meeting, Lyons Upper Elementary students were recognized by their principal, Mrs. Rhonda Stone, for outstanding performance on the beginning-of-the-year iReady Diagnostic. Mrs. Stone acknowledged the overwhelming LUES parent support at the meeting and discussed the beginning-of-the-year iReady diagnostic. The top 10 iReady diagnostic performers, in Reading and Math, from each grade were recognized during the meeting.

Prioritize Tasks
Teach your child to prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines. Creating a calendar or a to-do list can be an effective way to keep track of assignments and deadlines and provide a visual for your child. Always check the Take Home Folder for homework assignments. Create a Homework Schedule
Establish a regular homework schedule that accommodates your child's needs and your family's activities . Consistency in when and where they do their homework can improve productivity. Help establish buy-in from your child by letting them be a part of creating the schedule. Your child will be assigned homework every Monday- Thursday. You should receive handouts on what homework has been assigned in the Take Home Folder. Any time you have questions if your child has homework, please reach out to the teacher. Homework not completed at home will be completed at recess each day.
On Sunday afternoon, the Toombs County School System was notified by several concerned individuals about a threatening social media post circulating in our community. We immediately contacted our local law enforcement partners to investigate the matter. After conducting interviews with the individuals involved, it was determined that the post did not originate from or specifically mention Toombs County or the Toombs County School System. However, similar threats have been shared across multiple communities in the region.
This alarming trend is affecting many areas, especially in light of the recent tragic events at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. Our thoughts and prayers remain with that community. School Districts across the state are facing these widespread online threats, which, while not always originating locally, are being shared extensively and causing concern.
Please rest assured that we take ALL threats seriously and act with urgency. We are grateful for the strong partnerships we have with both the Lyons Police Department and the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office. These agencies are ready to support us at a moment’s notice to investigate any potential threats or suspicious behavior.
As a precaution, we have requested that our law enforcement partners continue their presence on our campuses to provide an additional layer of security. We sincerely thank the concerned citizens who brought this post to our attention, as well as the Lyons Police Department and the Toombs County Sheriff’s Department for their continued vigilance and support.
Around 5:45 this morning the Toombs County School System was made aware of a disturbing social media post that insinuated “shooting”. The post did not mention any of our schools. However, we felt it was necessary to notify law enforcement of the post, and both Lyons Police Department and the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office quickly responded to the post and contained the issue before school started. As a layer of extra support and security, we have additional officers at each school. Rest assured that the safety and security of all of our students and staff is paramount in what we do each day. Thanks to both the Lyons Police Department and Toombs County Sheriff’s Department for working together with us to address this matter swiftly. We are continuing to operate as normal but will continue to have additional law enforcement on each of our campuses.
LUES HOMECOMING PARADE PERMISSION FORMS
The HOMECOMING PARADE is part of our Positive Behavior Rewards. In order for a student to attend, they must bring back their permission form (front and back filled out), have no office referrals or classroom referrals from 8/30/24-9/20/24 (15 days of excellent behavior) to attend. Encourage your child to have a dedicated and clutter-free study space that is quiet and free from distractions. Ensure they have all the necessary supplies and resources they need and that they can be easily accessed.
